Sometimes a vacuum leak causes the cruise to be inop. A vacuum line going under the battery to a vacuum reservoir which is a plastic bottle under the front bumper. If no vacuum from engine is getting to this, it will not work. Do you have a friend who knows cars? Have them check this. A line from intake manifold goes to a vacuum reservoir then to cruise unit.

Easiest way to find out might be to get to autozone and have them scan for trouble codes. If it's caused by a sensor the computer should have a code stored.
It could be the clock spring in the steering column but that might also bring on the airbag light or stop the horn working. It might be a switch gone bad. If it's any of those two you might not get any code for it.
I doubt it should cost what the others are stating. If you do find trouble codes that's the easiest way to narrow down the cause.
Probably the best idea would be to register on JeepForum.com and ask your question on there. You might find someone on there who will know better what the usual causes of your problem are. If you need parts you can get help finding them too. And someone may know a trusty mechanic or 4x4 shop in your area to do the work if you don't feel able yourself.
it all depends with whats wrong with it i don't think its going to be over a 1,000 at absolute most maybe 500 never done a cruise control replace so i could be wrong on the price. take it to a garage(that you trust or find out from other people who is the best) see if they will give you an estimate
